C5 thrown a 'serpentine' belt

My C5 was unused (unusually) for about a month, but when I started it the sepentine belt was chucked off its pulleys and snapped, disabling the alternator, power steering, water pump, aircon etc.

I'm hoping it was just a problem with the tensioner and not the harmonic balancer, but until a new one arrives here in the depths of rural France I'm unable to replace it.

Anybody else had their car throw a belt for no apparent reason? Scratchchin Bigear

Hmmm. Many years ago I had a Saab 9/3 turbo which dumped its belt due to a seized A/C compressor. Don't know if same can apply to C5 but worth checking.

My C5 started to make some horrible noises whilst running but fortunately it was somewhere where I could switch it off quickly. The belt was starting to shred and delaminate, hitting everything in its increasing radius path. Willy

That turned out to be the harmonic balancer.....

Hope you get it sorted Thumbs up

New belt arrived today, so I installed it straight away. The car started ok, but looking down I have some slight wobble on my harmonic balancer, so I guess that needs replacing. Just watched a couple of youtubes and it looks like a big job. B*gger. Rolling Eyes

Hi Pete
Sorry to hear that. The crank pulley / balancer is a commnon problem on C5s the outer ring breaks loose from the inner. We've done a couple & it can be quite a job. Good look.

Finally all sorted - it's taken a while!

For the rest of the story see http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=147157#147157

Very Happy
