1972 diff rebuild


Now starting the diff rebuild on my 72 small block C3. It's stripped down and the left hand yoke has worn down to the retaining c clip. The posi clutches don't appear to be worn much.
I'm getting a new bearing and seal kit, but want to know where is the best place to buy the yokes from. Looked on all the usual sites and cost and possibly quality varies drastically!
Should you renew both yokes and the clutches? With this option the cost adds up to more than recon unit!
Some yokes are reconditioned and say have hardened steel inserts in end to stop wear, are these better or worse than new (chinese) yokes?
Which components actually wear causing the end of yoke to wear down on centre pin?

Paul, have a word with Scott at Corvette Kingdom. Or, drop Gary Ramardi (GTR1999 on this forum) a PM. Gary is US based and is considered the "guru" on diffs and rear wheel bearings etc. He can almost certainly point you the direction of a suitable supplier, unless Scott can sort you out.

It is the actual yoke end that wears, apparently due to an issue with case hardening on certain units, usually year specific. In effect, the yoke end takes the weight of the car's rear, as the driveshaft is the top link of the suspension.

Based on my experience, a rebuilt unit is probably cheaper than replacing all the "innards" of yours. Rolling Eyes
