Importing C4, but need to temporarily register in the UK

Hi Guys,

I'm importing a 1989 C4 Convertible later this month, but I need to register it in the UK for a year before importing it here to Ireland (as there is a strict 30yr rule on tax), so I need to understand the process involved (as never did it in the UK before).

Image

Car will land next month in Southampton, so I need to start planning this now.

Once it lands in the UK and I clear all HMRC charges etc, what needs to happen next?
1) Do you register the car first with DVLA and then MOT it?
2) In order to register the car in the UK with the DLVA, does it have to be phsycially inspected in person by someone in the DVLA, or is it done online/via post.
3) In order to MOT an 89 C4, what do I need to get changed? (indicators, fog lights etc).
4) I'll be importing the car to Ireland almost immediately and insuring via the UK - so I'm just wondering can I register the car and then export without a MOT and insure here (Insurance companies will insure here on UK plates - unlike non-classic cars). i.e can you get your registration number before you MOT the car?

Also, is there a company/agent that can do all of the above for you?

The plan will be to register it here in Ireland in Jan 2019, so appreciate any help with understanding the best way to do the above.

p.s I've already ordered the DVLA import pack from the HMRC website to my UK address.

Rowan.

To register you will first need an MOT I'm afraid! The form that comes in the pack and all the relevant documents needed has to go off in the post, including the original US title, so take copies of everything!

Aha, ok that clarifies the process.

Got an idea of what needs to be changed on a C4 to pass an MOT and what is the typical costs involved?

My C4 was already imported but it wouldn't be much. Headlights are a standard size so plenty to choose from, change the driving lights/indicators and you'll need a rear fog.

My car has all red rear lights still, the indicators are by the numberplate in the reverse lamp housings. Fog light is also in the red rears so now ugly thing on the bottom

It looks like from next month, reversing lights will be a requirement for the MOT. I have the same set up as you on my Jeep Wrangler, so Iím going to have to re-instate the reversing lights and come up with another solution for rear indicators. My C4 is OK though.

I think it depends on the MOT testing station.

My 91 passes each year with red rear indicators and the front yellow sidelights/indicators.

One of the reversing lights was converted to a rear fog by fitting a red bulb and the original sealed beam rectangular headlights I converted by buying a pair of headlamp reflectors off ebay, for a Toyota MR2, MK2, which are the same size and you can then fit conventional halogen dual filament headlamp bulbs.

Thanks Fran. I just had my Jeep MOTíd last week and the MOT guy made note of the reversing lights as turn indicators perhaps being a problem after May 2018, but admitted he hadnít studied the new regulations yet. My Wrangler is a 2009, but first registered in April 2009, so I guess Iím good.

Thanks again for the link to the latest info.

No doubt about that.Yes Iíve heard of folks getting MOT certificates on cars that have never left their garages! As a guest in your country, I have to stay legal, so want to make sure my cars can pass an actual MOT and not have to hope for the ďfriendlyĒ MOT tester.
