Whether you need mineral or synth, buy the best not some recycled stuff which I suspect these classic oils are.

I use Mobil 1 10w60 older car/high mileage oil and change it every 15k or 2years. Lovely stuff and it works out cheaper to do this than constant mineral changes.

Love your car and feed it only the best!! Thumbs up

I'm sure that Millers and Castrol would take you to task on that Steve - not to mention Valvoline! I don't believe they are re-cycled. I've used a re-cycled oil, many years ago and not in the Vette - easy to tell, just by the smell!

I had a long chat with the Mobil 1 Rep at Sebring a while ago. Even he had to admit that for an "older" Corvette, that means C3 and earlier, Mobil 1 was probably not the best option and that a low detergent, high ZDDP Mineral was best. Hence, my choice. As the engine in our old girl has never been apart as far as I can tell and is still getting well over 1000 miles to a pint - that's an imperial pint - I think it's doing OK.

I always use Halfords Classic 20/50, about 20 for 5 litres which is the exact amount you need on a C3, got all the vital ingredients your old Vette needs!

Interesting that you put 5 litres in Tony. Even with the long PF1218 filter, the US/Imperial calculation on the recommended amount for our 78 comes out at 4.2 Imperial Quarts. And that will take it just over the "full" mark on the dip stick.

The "classic" oil referred to here is Halfords own. No idea who makes it, or what it was before, but it's cheap for a reason.

The other current one in a cute can is "Duckhams 20w50". Duckhams excellent green oil was discontinued in the '60's when BP bought them out and replaced the oil with BP Super Visco Static with a green dye. No idea what's in that one either, but its cheap too..

Re: Oil

My point is simply, treat your vehicle to the best and proven product whatever that may be.

Non or low detergent oil is what was used in old motors before a separate filter was installed. It allowed detritus and dirt to sink to the bottom of the sump unlike modern detergent oils that hold dirt in suspension to be caught in a filter. Not sure how that works in a Corvette of any age.

If you like green oil Duckhams is back on the market and it has the correct amount of ZDP for our flat tappets!
