Spring Compressor

At some point next year I plan to overhaul my suspension, so I'm sitting here writing my Christmas list for Santa and I thought a spring compressor would make a great present. This one looks amazingly cheap, but I think it would fit. Can anyone see any problems that I can't?

Re: Spring Compressor

Yes that's the one I use but in an unorthodox way. There is/was a pic in one of my project threads.

Remove shock absorber, undo compressor bolt and with a washer or two on it drop it thrum frame hole where shocker went.

Bolt the jaws (you only use the pair attached with the threaded nut) from underneath lower a-arm where the shocker was ,the bolt is long enough.

Because there's no time put an air or electric wrench on nut and tighten it until spring is compressed.

Crack ball joint.

Loosen compressor bolt and hey presto jobs done.

Refittting is same in reverse.

Re: Spring Compressor

Sounds like that's one to ask Santa for then.
I don't understand your sentence "Because there's no time put an air or electric wrench on nut and tighten it until spring is compressed." Why is there no time?

Although not too busy to find these pics. Look closely at the spring you can see the jaws are upside down to clamp up towards the frame. The tyre lever is used for leverage to move compressed spring back onto lower A arm cup.

Re: Spring Compressor

Thanks for finding those, I had a look in the forums but couldn't find them. Is it just me or is the photo a different setup to how you described removing the spring?

Re: Spring Compressor

These pics were in the project section under 69 Chassis swop but this site has a tendency to shuffle the photos over time.

Same as I described it's just in the pic I am installing the spring therefore compressing it to the frame upper cup. The tool effectively replaces shock absorber.

Sometimes instead of disconnecting ball joint you can choose to remove upper a arm to frame bolts to move a arms and hub out of the way to get spring out.
