rear dampers


Tried taking my rear dampers off today. No problem with the top fixing or removing the nut at the bottom, but can't get either damper off the stud at the bottom. Tried levering with a big bar but I guess the inner sleeve of the bush is rusted to the stud. Is there a method to do this, or is it just a case of more brute force needed?

Norm, did you mean to paste in this link? It will be useful when I come to remove the rear spring, but I can't see any mention of the shock absorbers in it.

Not sure how you are doing this, but It helps to have the trailing arm jacked up a little to put the shock into something like the position it is in on the road. you should them be able to pull the top mounting bolt out towards you. Then you can turn the shock out of top mounting "slot", allowing you to get more "wiggle" on it. At the very least, the inner rubber bush should come free and that would allow the shock to come off. You can then decide what to do about the seized sleeve, if that is the case. It's almost impossible to get the shock to come off the lower mount if it is still attached at the top in any event.

Alternatively, if it is indeed seized, you may as well change the shock mount. That way you don't even need to get the old shock off the mount.

Regardless of what anyone says, you WILL need a Shock Mount Removing Tool for this job, (Corvette Kingdom will have one) but once you have one it's not as hard as it is sometimes told - you do just need a lot of WD40 first and a very big hammer! It all sounds a bit "bubba", but it does work.

In reality, if you doing the shocks, a new mount is probably a good idea.

John, not sure what you were going for with the word damper, but kentvette's response ref. shocks is pretty much on the mark. Once that rust settles in, it's one big PITA to replace. Good luck with endeavor.

Thanks to both of you. I've got the top of the dampers (or shock absorbers in the US http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) free, so sounds like I either need to just apply more force or else cut through the ring at the bottom of the shock absorber. I'll be doing a complete suspension overhaul and I think the shocks will need replacing anyway. They certainly will if I can't get them off without destroying the rubber.

If you're doing a complete overhaul then definitely put new Shock Mounts on it! There really is no point faffing around with the old ones, which have to come off anyway if you're removing the tie rods..... That way you'll get nice new mounts, plus the new nuts that go on them.

You should also receive new rubbers when you buy new shocks as part of the "package" so just get the shock mounts off and be done with it! Very Happy

Don't forget, when you bolt everything back on, the split pins for the large nut that holds the shock mount on, go in from the bottom - a sure sign of a "proper job"!

Shocks are absorbed by the spring, and the spring's resultant oscillations are controlled (dampened) by the dampers. Thats why we refer to them as such.

Try driving a car with the dampers removed and you'll understand this only too well.

Oh you mean driving without shocks? I've done that for sh!ts & grins, quite a bouncy ride.......... Very Happy
