Hi Clive, welcome to the club and prospective Corvette ownership.
It may seem daunting at first but as you've already found out the club and it's members are happy to provide advice and share knowledge.
Probably a good idea to narrow your choice to C5 or C6, that'll make it a bit easier for you.
In my case after owning a C3 for over 4 years I wanted a C5, a manual, and a red one. So my choice was limited but in the end I came across a car on Pistonheads, a one owner who had just bought a C6 Z06, the latest model at the time.
Luckily I'd found a car where the owner had a genuine reason for sale, the condition of the car from new had obviously been his pride and joy.
Almost 12 years later the car is still in similar condition and has proved totally reliable, only costing me for the usual maintenance items.
So, my point is - be patient and try and find a car that has been very well looked after by it's owner. Try and talk to the owner if possible, hopefully a club member looking to move up to another Corvette albeit a later model, as in my case.
'Specialist' dealers may well have access to cars that may not show up on the usual radar, but they're still in it for the money as all dealers are. Talking to an owner I believe is key to deciding on the right car.
Good luck with your search, Corvette's are great cars so you won't look back (apart from those in the mirror as you pass them)!

Hello and welcome to the club. I'm another big fan of manual gearboxes. Yes I totally appreciate that in new world tech that semi-auto gearboxes with flappy paddles change gear faster, can be more fuel efficient and give you a better 0-60 when in auto mode etc, and probably would get me around a track circuit quicker than me driving a manual.
HOWEVER, I love driving and I love driver involvement. The overwhelming joy you get when you perfectly time gear changes and clutch operation is lovely and I love the interaction with the car and the level of involvement a manual gearstick gives you. I feel like I'm the one driving the car, not the car driving me and making it all easy-mode for me. I've driven a few autos + flappys (not Corvettes though) and I've just personally found them boring (though granted fast gear changes etc) as there is not much involvement for me and no satisfaction in executing a well timed gear change.
