C6 Z06 Flat battery

Hi all,

Looks like my battery conditioner has failed and after a number of months of not driving is totally flat. To top it of, my battery charger is also knackered.

Have a new Rohr DFC-50P charger coming but my question is, can you charge the battery in situ? I had to swap my battery last year but as soon as I disconnected it, the alarm went off and wouldn't turn off until the new battery was fitted.

Keep reading different opinions on charging batteries in situ, any thoughts? The new charger has a trickle function so I was hoping to leave it connected.

Many thanks

No, I wouldn't connect a charger to battery while the battery was still connected. To much fancy electronics in a modern car to risk it.

How do you know it's the tender that's died and not the battery? My rule of thumb is that if a battery is over 2 years old and I get a "fail to start" it's new battery time.

Could you get a jump start and sort it out from there?

Bear in mind that if the battery is truly dead your alternator will be working overtime in an attempt to achieve the impossible.

Best thing to do is remove the battery and charge it. Awkward at this time of year because low temperature affects the process. Ideally you want to fully charge the battery and then let it stand indoors overnight. In the morning check the voltage at room temperature with a good voltmeter. If it's 12.4 volts or less you need a new battery. (A good battery would show 12.6 or more). If you want to put things beyond doubt get your battery specialist to do a high current drop test.

Had the AA out and tested the battery and all is ok, battery was only purchased July 2018. So how do you remove the battery without the alarm going off?

Disconnect the negative first then the positive, (stops sparking) , if it was charged.
Then take off the strap and try and move cables out of the way.
Getting it out is a PITA, duct tape strap or similar will help.

Cheers for the info.

Current battery I changed to is an Optima Red Top so fits a treat, easy in and out.

Thought when i changed the battery out, i did do neg first then positive but cant remember for sure.

Will do those steps when my new charger turns up, also bought a CTEK conditioner with AGM charging mode, so currently in for 140 and not driven it yet !!

Good job I love this car !!

Re: C6 Z06 Flat battery

Battery sorted courtesy of a CTEK smart charger which is AGM battery compatible.
Well worth the 65
