Birdcage repair

Does anyone have any experience, tips or advice regarding birdcage repairs? Specifically, in relation to replacement of the windscreen lower outer panel. That's this one.

Most people seem to remove the front clip to do this, but I really don't want to extend my restoration time any further, so I'm going to try the method that Corvette Kingdom show on their website. I've ordered a panel from them and Scott was very helpful in explaining how they do it, but I'd appreciate any other help I can get before the panel arrives.

If you're not familiar with the method, it involves removing the inner panel to get access to the outer panel, then remove that and replace them both. Sounds easy if you say it quickly!
Here's how my car looks with both panels in place, then only the outer and now neither.

Hopefully I've worked out how to add photos properly.

Yes almost. Are you going to bring along your sheared oil pump drive?

Good to see someone else is getting in deep. You might as well carry on with Scottís instruction. Mine have front ends off, itís best to clear as much room for welding, Iím just about to order an upper screen frame I presume you are going for inner outer lower frame?

Re: Birdcage repair

I'm just replacing the lower outer, the inner panel is fine so I'll re-use that. The bit I'm most concerned about is the welding as access is pretty restricted and has to be done from the inside of the car, plus of course I need to be careful not to burn the firewall. Do you only have problems with the upper frame, or with the lower as well?

I have problems where you really shouldn't have problems! The pictures tell the story of the upper frame, one side of the lower is perfect the other not so perfect but it's all good fun.

Wow, the state of your upper frame makes my corrosion seem less worrying now, although at least you can get at things easily enough. Strangely, I have corrosion at the bottom left hand corner and a small bit at the upper right hand corner, but not in the other 2 corners.

Re: Birdcage repair

It's only metal and the upper frame comes with inner/outer spot welded together so won't take long. If you have rot on either left or right sides of frame I have a pair cut from a C3. Have you already bought a repair piece ? I know of a complete inner and outer lower screen frame for sale.

Re: Birdcage repair

Afraid I've already ordered an outer panel from Corvette Kingdom, not cheap but it seemed fair as I wanted their advice about fitting it. My sides are both okay, but thanks for the offer. I do have a long list of other bits that I'm going to need if you know someone who is splitting a car.
